Posted - 05/01/2004 : 10:06:32 For Clarity. I've posted the themes we DO know of. Feel free to join in on this one if you know of any more! The following is pasted from the page on Tony's site.
Gallery Theme. The music is actually called "Leftbank", although more recently it seems to have become "Leftbank 2". Music Factory Entertainment Group brought out a CD by pianist Lance Gambit, called Leftbank. The composer is allegedly Wayne Hill. The music is also featured on "This is the return of cult music" which is a collection of classic film and TV themes produced by Virgin Records. More recently we heard from Terry Beech, who is chairman of Hospital Radio, Colchester, that from our existing information, he had tracked it down on Amazon, on a CD called "Sound Gallery volume (import) by Sound Gallery" on which it is called Leftbank 2. The CD is priced at £15.99, and it also boasts the Alan Freeman "Pick of the Pops" theme.
Terry gave us the following URL at Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000000IAZ/0216-0689362-8904455/202-1145918-9541413 A source for 'Goofy' (The music for the Burbles):http://www.whr.org.uk/suitcase.html
Other music used on Tony's programmes include "Cavatina" (John Williams) - often a substitute for 'Leftbank' and a bouncy little number called "Java" (Al Hirt) - generally played as the closing music for Vision On. The most memorable from the Vision On period was 'Gurney Slade' by Max Harris. It was used with the 'clock' animation - a bird and clock where the numbers would fall off or move around. It was first used on the original 60s TV series 'The strange world of Gurney Slade' starring Anthony Newley. Certainly a lot of music used came from "Mood Music" on the Chappel label. If you know of any others, do let us know!
Paul Deacon, Broadcast Media Co-ordinator at the BBC, brought us up to date on the most commonly known themes used in Vision On. (Thanks Paul!):
Accroche-Toi, Caroline (Vasori) (Opening theme from Vision On) Sylvester mood disc SMCLP502 also found on Sound Gallery 2/Return of Cult Fiction
Left Bank Two (Wayne Hill) (Theme From The Gallery) De Wolfe DWLP 2846 By The Noveltones directed by Frans Mijts - also on Sound Gallery CD. Incidentally, 'Left Bank Two' is so called because there is also a Left Bank One(!) on the same De Wolfe LP (Cheers Paul, we DID wonder about that one!)
Merry Ocarina (from illustrations, it's part no.2)(Arvay)(Used for Humphrey The Tortoise sequence) De Wolfe mood disc DWLP 2323
Goofy(Johns)(Used for Burbles sequence) Studio G mood CD SG-CD05
The 'Digger' theme (bass Harmonica) was called 'Elephant Dance' and was played by Harry Pitch - who also played the hamonica theme for 'Last Of The Summer Wine'.

This one's been reissued on CD by the de Wolfe library on the Hudson label in their 'Cliche Favourites' series - the CD itself isn't commercially available, unfortunately. |

Posted - 13/03/2005 : 16:43:22 Drum Dramatics (also known as Drum Dramatics No.1) was one of many pieces of stock music that was used in Dr Who during the 1960s.
Nice to see that Sylvester McCoy, later to be associated himself with the Dr Who series, was linked to this music in Vision On.

Posted - 18/01/2004 : 13:46:33 Just a bit of info for you. After mucho detective work I found two great CDs of what I've dubbed '60s/70s plastic grooves' including material from the Paris Studio Group who also recorded the Vision On theme tune 'Acroche Toi Caroline'. Of course the original LP recordings have all but disappeared now but many are now showing up on CD again:
http://www.tunes.co.uk/tunes/featured/5346.htm http://www.tunes.co.uk/tunes/featured/7205.html
And possibly: http://www.tunes.co.uk/tunes/featured/5696.html
Moving forward to today, these kind of retro sounds are still being produced (believe it or not) and in a world in danger of becoming techno-brainmashed - its quite encouraging to know this kind of sound is valued again. Top of the list has to be a Japanese group called 'Pizzacato Five'. http://www.pizzicatomania.co.uk/pizzicato.htm Worth checking them out - particularly 'bim bom'. On a similar theme the ABSOLUTELY wonderful track 'Dear Mr Salesman' by 'Fantastic Plastic Machine' (aka Tokyo based Tomoyuki Tanaka, writer, DJ) has my vote as the best around for that retro plastic feel - hear it once and you'll be hooked.
You often used to hear this kind of music in those ITC detective type series like 'The Persuaders', 'Jason King' etc etc, particularly when the scene is some Monte Carlo disco (have a horrendous one with Roger Moore doing his very best to look 'with it'). These early 70s grooves (great use of the word here) are almost like a funky Jethro Tull/Vincent Crane with Vibes - but without the Acid - much like supermarket music of the day. Frilly shirts and crimplene slacks here we come!
Irma Records do a whole selection entitled 'La Douche' which comprises some 50 or 60 CDs all along this theme including "Sound Book" - (De Wolfe Music Library & Background Sound). Certainly the vast majority of music used in Vision On came from the 'De Wolfe' label, so we're on the right lines here. Often described as Italian Easy Listening, it all has that chilled 'Vision On' aura about it, tinged with Brazilian undertones and seems to be really popular out there on the club circuit - astounding really.
Tis strange since my roots are in Rock music but I worked in Alternative Radio years ago, notably 'Radio Overflow' (Now On Sky I believe) and we were often called upon to use stuff like this to get just the right amount of cheesyness for Jingles and fill-ins so I've had a lot of exposure to stuff like this. Ah the age of aquarius....
What goes around comes around I guess. The fashions can damned well stay where they are but some of this music is sheer double cream. The only REALLY scary thought is that they could well have been played by Tony Blackburn and that DOES trouble me........
Footnote: Paul Deacon informs me that theres actually a Leftbank 1 - Hmmmmmmm

Posted - 07/01/2004 : 13:36:03 Someone on the Mausoleum Club (www.the-mausoleum-club.org.uk) recently posted a "p-as-b" for 7.1.75. This is a "programmes as broadcast" sheet, kept by the BBC for all of its transmissions so they have a record of the music and films used for copyright purposes. This one featured the episode of Vision On for that day, "Chains" and so lists all the music that was used in the programme - sadly it doesn't tell us which sequence used which music, and of course some of those listed might have only been used once. But for your information, here is the complete list of music used in the Vision On episode on 1.7.1975 !
Partita no. 1 in B Major Courante (Bach arr. Loussier) Jacques Loussier (Decca SKL 5023) Java (Friday, Toussaint, Tyler) Bert Kaempfert and his orchestra (Polydor LFHM 46446) Haydn Symphony no. 101 (Haydn) The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (Eclipse ECS 574) Gurney Slade (Harris) Orchestra (Fontana TF 416) Accroche-Toi Caroline (Vasori) The Paris Studio Group (Sylvester SMC 502) Selection: Lucky, Two Left Feet (Reno, Stoller) Orchestra (Hudson DW 3259) Banjo Street Busker (W. Andrea) Orchestra (Hudson DW 3184) Goofy (Johns) Orchestra (Studio G LPSG 1010) Left Bank Two (Hill) Noveltones (Hudson DW 2846) Jelly Bean (Clive Hicks) Orchestra (Keith Prowse KPM 1119) Mini Clarinet (K Prowse) Orchestra (Keith Prowse KPM 1045) Comedy Cocktails part 2 (Gerard) Orchestra (Chappell LPC 786790) Comedy Cocktails part 4 (-) Orchestra (Chappell LPC 797802) Comedy Cocktails no. 2 (Gerard) Orchestra (Chappell CIS 5030) Flute Reggae (Clive Hicks) Orchestra (Keith Prowse KPM 1121) Drum dramatics (Farnon) Orchestra (Chappell LPC 826831) Survival (John Cameron) Orchestra (Keith Prowse KPM 1130) The Searchers (Bounty) Orchestra (Standard ESL 124) Breakaway (Midas Touch) Orchestra (Standard ESL 128) Bubble and Squeak (Mike Vickers) Orchestra (Keith Prowse KPM 1101) Perky Penguin (Peter Hope) The Crawford Light Orchestra (Weinberger JW 285) Merry Ocarina (Arvay) Orchestra (Hudson DW 2823)
The film sequences used in the programme were: Gigantic Dog with Tony Hart Backwards Bicycle Film with Sylvester McCoy Prof film: Winch on Boat and Lawnmower with David Cleveland.
This is perhaps one reason why it is a bit unlikely to expect a commercial release of Vision On in the near future - the music clearance issues would be horrendous!
